The World Economic Forum, or WEF, is one of the most powerful and influential organizations when it comes to shaping the global agenda on economic, political, and social issues. But what exactly is this group and why does it matter so much?
The WEF was founded in 1971 by German engineer and economist Klaus Schwab. Originally called the European Management Forum, it began as a way to connect European business leaders and facilitate discussions on growing their companies' reach globally.
However, Schwab had bigger aspirations than just this - he wanted to establish an organization that could bring together the brightest minds across sectors to collaborate on improving the "state of the world." The WEF's stated mission is to "engage the foremost political, business, cultural and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas."
From its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the WEF operates as a not-for-profit foundation promoting stakeholder capitalism - the idea that corporations should serve the interests of all stakeholders rather than just shareholders. It advocates for public-private cooperation as the means to drive positive change and progress.
The WEF doesn't just convene leaders - it actively tries to drive action and implement its vision for stakeholder capitalism through various initiatives and partnerships. It publishes extensive reports and acts as an agenda-setting think tank.
